DOT inspections are a fact of life for commercial drivers. But they don't have to be stressful. With the right preparation, you can pass every inspection with confidence.
Tip 1: Keep your ELD updated and working. Before every trip, verify that your ELD is connected, synced, and showing the correct duty status. A malfunctioning or disconnected ELD is one of the most common violations.
Tip 2: Review your logs daily. Take 2 minutes at the end of each day to review your HOS logs for accuracy. Look for unassigned driving time, missed status changes, and any errors that need correction.
Tip 3: Complete your DVIR. The Driver Vehicle Inspection Report is required before and after each trip. Make sure you're documenting your pre-trip and post-trip inspections, even if everything looks good.
Tip 4: Keep your documents organized. You should always have your CDL, medical card, vehicle registration, insurance, and any required permits readily accessible. An inspector shouldn't have to wait while you search through a messy cab.
Tip 5: Know your rights. You have the right to continue your inspection at a safe location if you're stopped in a dangerous spot. You can also request a re-inspection if you believe the results are unfair. Stay calm, be professional, and let your preparation speak for itself.
